What is My Body?
The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! Matthew 6:22-23
Ask most people what their body "is," and they'll point to the mirror. Skin, bone, the weight they'd like to lose, the ache in the lower back. Solid. Continuous. Theirs.
It isn't quite true.
By mass, your body is somewhere around 60-70% water — a figure that shifts with age, adiposity, and hydration, but which puts you, structurally, closer to a wave than a wall.
The remainder is not a slab of matter either. It is an extraordinarily loose federation of proteins, lipids, minerals, and nucleic acids, most of them folded, refolded, tagged for destruction, rebuilt, and replaced through molecular recycling ranging from minutes to years.
The atoms in your body today are largely not the atoms that were only a few years ago. What persists is not the material.
What persists is the arrangement, the configuration, the organization.
So the honest answer to "what is my body" is not "a thing." It's closer to a pattern that has learned to keep replacing its own furniture without losing the shape of the room.
The Room is Held by Current, Not by Walls
Here is where it gets interesting for those of us who think about digital infrastructure for a living. Strip away the water and the loosely-scaffolded proteins, and what's actually doing the work of holding this together moment to moment is not structural at all — it's electromagnetic, that mysterious fundamental force of the universe we barely understand.
Ion gradients across membranes. Voltage differentials that fire neurons and contract cardiac tissue. The biophoton emissions coiled inside mitochondrial respiration. The whole nervous system is, in the most literal engineering sense, a signal-processing network running on electrochemical potential — mass-bearing and massless waveforms working in concert, the way a data center is simultaneously copper, silicon, heat, and the pattern of bits moving through it that nobody could point to and call "the file."
You don't have a body so much as you have a standing wave — a dynamic equilibrium that borrows matter, organizes it electromagnetically for a while, and releases it again.
This is not mysticism. It's cell biology. But cell biology, taken seriously, hands you a question it cannot itself answer: What is organizing the organization?
Because a field needs a source. A current needs a directing intelligence, or at minimum a directing pattern, that is not itself reducible to the current.
In digital infrastructure terms, you can describe the electrical behavior of a network exhaustively and still not have accounted for the architecture that makes the traffic coherent rather than noise. The wires do not design themselves. Neither, I'd suggest, does the astonishing, layered coherence of 37 trillion cells choosing, on a sub-second basis, not to become cancer.
Hanbledzoin and the Kesdjan Scaffold
This is the terrain Gurdjieff was mapping when he spoke of Hanbledzoin — the "blood of the Soul," the finer, more mobile quality of energy that mediates between the coarser physical body and something with greater plasticity and coherence: the Kesdjan body (the middle part of the Soul).
In the Fourth Way cosmology, the physical body is not self-organizing in the ultimate sense. It is organized from a finer material, itself organized from a finer material still — the Ray of Creation cascading downward in density, upward in freedom. The physical form is the last, heaviest condensation of an organizing current that begins somewhere far more subtle than protein folding.
What the Being-Foods Octave add to this is a way of thinking about energies rather than substances — the physical body running on a spectrum from the coarsest mechanical energy up through automatic, sensitive, conscious and creative energies, each a genuine octave requiring its own "food," its own shock to bridge the interval.
The electromagnetic activity we can measure with an EEG or an ECG is real, but it is the lowest, most externalized register of a much larger scale. It is what conscious organization looks like once it has been stepped all the way down into flesh.
Which is to say: Gurdjieff's answer to "what stands behind the electromagnetic organization" is not "nothing" and not "randomness." It is finer materiality organized by finer will, all the way up to God.
The Word in Whom All Things Hold Together
Paul, writing to the Colossians, says something that should stop an engineer cold:
He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. Colossians 1:17
Not "created" — hold together. Sunestēken (συυνέστηκεν). The present-tense, ongoing cohesion of matter.
Paul is not describing a watchmaker who wound the mechanism and walked away. He is describing a sustaining current, active now, without which the ion gradients would flatten, the proteins would denature, the standing wave would collapse into randomness within seconds. The Logos is not merely the origin of organization. He is its ongoing administrator.
This is also, not incidentally, the deep grammar behind the Orthodox insistence on theosis — that the human person is not a static object to be saved once and shelved, but a pattern in living, continuous relationship with the very Source that organizes it.
Hesychastic practice — the watch of the heart, the guarding of attention — is in this light not a metaphor. It is an actual technology for aligning the finer currents of Hanbledzoin, of Kesdjan-body coherence, with the uncreated Light that Orthodox theology calls the divine energies: God's activity in the world, really present, not merely symbolic, and not identical with His unknowable essence.
Embodied Attention, Intention, Will — the Trinitarian structure I keep returning to in this work — is the human faculty that stands closest to this organizing current. It is the place where the "massless waveforms" of sensitive and conscious energies meet the "mass-bearing" fact of the materiality of the body.
When attention scatters, the current organizing you weakens; you feel this as fatigue that no amount of sleep touches, as the diffuse anxiety of a life running on automatic.
When attention gathers — in prayer, in the Fourth Way's self-remembering, in genuine connected presence — something in the electromagnetic coherence of the body itself measurably steadies. This is not poetry. It is interoception, vagal tone, heart-rate variability, and it is also, I'd argue, the lower octave of theosis.
So, What is My Body?
Not a wall. A weather system with a will behind it.
It is 70% water and a loose scaffold of protein held in dynamic tension by electromagnetic forces that themselves require an organizing source outside their own closed loop. Science can describe the current with extraordinary precision. It cannot, by its own method, name what stands behind the current — what keeps the field coherent rather than dissolving into thermodynamic noise the instant the "automatic" energies run out of momentum.
Your body is not, finally, yours in the sense of self-sufficient. It is on loan from a Current that is still, this second, holding the room together. That should change how you spend your attention today.
