The UnHoly Trinity: Atheism, Narcissism and the Hasnamussian

“The second Babylonian teaching which then had many followers, and which, passing from generation to generation, also reached your contemporary favorites, was on the contrary one of the atheistic teachings of that period. In this teaching by the terrestrial Hasnamussian candidates of that time, it was stated that there is no God in the world, and moreover no soul in man, and hence that all those talks and discussions about the soul are nothing more than the deliriums of sick visionaries." (G.I.Gurdjieff, Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson, p. 343)

In every age, the question of God is the decisive question for humanity. Today, atheism parades itself as enlightened, rational, and morally advanced. It claims to rescue us from superstition and oppression. Yet beneath its polished façade lies a deeper pathology—the narcissism of self-worship.

Gurdjieff called this being the Hasnamuss: a human crystallized in form but empty of Objective Conscience (the "Representative of the Creator"), a being whose higher faculties are stunted, whose ego reigns supreme, and whose destiny is ultimately suffering. The Gospels call it the refusal to “lose one’s life” for the sake of Christ—and therefore the forfeiture of the soul (Mark 8:36).

Atheism today, intertwined with the hedonistic, woke, and transgender ideologies of our age, is the very living expression of the Hasnamuss.

The Narcissism of Atheism

Atheism is not merely the absence of belief. It is the enthronement of man as the ultimate arbiter of reality.

  • To deny Godto deny a greater intelligence than oneself—is to deny any source of greater truth.

  • To deny the soulto deny a greater reality than one's body—is to refuse accountability greater than self-preservation.

  • To deny transcendenceto deny a greater evolution beyond oneself—is to enthrone appetite, ideology, and ego as the highest authority.

The atheist bows before no altar but the mirror. Narcissism becomes a creed, and self-worship becomes a religion.

Christ diagnosed this with deadly clarity:

“For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 16:25)

The atheist clings to selfhood, to comfort, to the illusion of autonomy. He refuses the surrender required for life. And in this refusal, he gains the world but loses his soul.

The Hasnamuss According to Gurdjieff

Gurdjieff’s Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson identifies the Hasnamuss as a type of three-brained being (human) whose inner structure has crystallized without the connection to higher (objective) conscience. Their traits are unmistakable:

  1. Absence of Objective Conscience – No anchor in divine impulse or cosmic law.

  2. Propagation of Maleficent Ideas – Systems of thought and ideology that deny higher realities and corrupt others.

  3. Definitized Ego – Stability achieved, but in deformation; ego is king, conscience absent.

  4. Cosmic Consequences – Without conscious effort, sacrifice, or suffering, they are doomed to remorse, disintegration, or eternal deformity.

Gurdjieff expands this in his description of the hasnamussian Naloo-osnian impulses (pp. 405–6) that include:

  1. Every kind of depravity, conscious as well as unconscious;

  2. The feeling of self-satisfaction from leading others astray;

  3. The irresistible inclination to destroy the existence of other breathing creatures;

  4. The urge to become free from the necessity of actualizing the being-efforts demanded by Nature;

  5. The attempt by every kind of artificiality to conceal from others what in their opinion are one’s physical defects;

  6. The calm self-contentment in the use of what is not personally deserved; and

  7. The striving to be not what one is.

This spectrum of Hasnamussian impulses is the very map of today’s culture.

The Hasnamussian Culture of Today

Look at our world and the modern manifestations of these impulses:

  1. Depravity, conscious or unconscious – Hedonistic culture exalts every form of indulgence, from pornography to drugs, as "personal freedom."

  2. Self-satisfaction from leading others astray – Public education, mainstream media, and social platforms propagate corruption, especially of children, in the name of “progress” and “justice.”

  3. Inclination to destroy others – Violence, euthanasia, abortion, ideological persecution, and radical social engineering are glorified as "moral triumphs."

  4. Refusal to actualize being-efforts – Work, sacrifice, and self-discipline are rejected; life is demanded without effort, and "rights are celebrated without duty."

  5. Artificial concealment of defects – Cosmetic surgery, digital filters, gender modifications, and endless performance "conceal natural form."

  6. Calm self-contentment in the undeserved – Entitlement culture, victimhood as virtue, and living off others’ labor exemplify this Hasnamussian "comfort."

  7. Striving to be not what one is – Transgender ideology is the crowning expression: the deliberate denial of one’s nature (that begins with the physical body) and the insistence that identity is a matter of invention, not discovery.

This is Hasnamussian culture writ large: narcissism made manifest, crystallized in a social order that denies God, conscience, and higher purpose.

Atheism’s hasnamussian whisper tells the broken that suicide is a lawful “opt-out” — that without God, soul, or transcendence death is merely silence without witness. What a seductive fantasy: death has no consequences, no accountability, no responsibility. Yet this lie is deadlier than death itself — a moral and metaphysical nullification that lures the desperate to stake everything on the illusion that becoming "nothing" equals freedom.

Atheism as the Engine of Hasnamussian Narcissism

Atheism is the intellectual and spiritual engine powering this deformation. Once God is denied, no higher authority restrains the ego. Once conscience is silenced, every vice becomes justified, every fantasy becomes sacred, every denial of reality becomes a moral right. Atheism is not a private opinion—it is the framework for the maleficent impulses of the Hasnamuss to express themselves culturally, socially, and politically.

The Consequences of Hasnamussian Atheism

Gurdjieff is stark about the destiny of the various degrees of Hasnamusses (pp. 409-410):

  • Retributive suffering – Narcissism cannot harmonize with cosmic law and must eventually break.

  • Disintegration of higher bodies – Soul and higher being can collapse under the weight of remorse, regret, and misdirected effort.

  • Eternal deformation – The “Eternal Hasnamuss” is locked forever in self-worship, devoid of conscience, incapable of redemption.

The Gospels echo this eternal consequence:

“And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 25:30)

The atheist believes himself free and awake. But he is in fact the most asleep and enslaved of all—trapped in a culture of self, narcissism, and denial, living the Hasnamussian fate in real time.

A Prophetic Warning

Atheism is not neutrality—it is severance. To deny God is to cut oneself off from higher orders of reality, from the very energies that nourish the soul and allow man to grow into higher life.

Christ declared that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that flows from God. Gurdjieff warned that without these higher substances, the soul crystallizes wrongly—becoming Hasnamussian: ego-bound, deformed, incapable of real being.

Atheism breeds this deformity. It masquerades as freedom but delivers only narcissism. And narcissism is the root of Hell on earth. What we now call “progress”—hedonism, wokeism, gender self-invention—is simply the spectrum of Hasnamussian impulses made social, the flowering of ego cut off from essence, of self cut off from God.

The warning is clear: awaken, receive the higher energies, and grow into the life of God—or be crystallized forever in the darkness of your own self-worship.
